A Richly Colored Sakiori Obi: Charming Checked Finish

$135.00 USD

mid twentieth century
121" x 7 1/4", 307.5 cm x 18.5 cm

This brightly colored, long sakiori obi is woven from a shredded cloth weft against a black and red cotton warp.

The warp yarns, which are hand torn rags, are extremely bright in saturated color. The practice of using bright colors for sakiori was not at all unusual, even in rural areas.  The availability of commercially dyed cottons spread throughout Japan, and even in remote, country regions of Japan we see these karafuru or colorful weavings in the mid-twentieth century.  Country people must have enjoyed playing with brightly colored cloth, which for such a long time was not widely available in Japan.

A nice feature of this obi is that one of the two, short sides is finished with a hand stitched piece of checked cloth. The second of the two short sides is finished with  less contrasting piece of cloth.

A good looking vintage sakiori obi of very good length, good color and very nice condition..
