A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cotton: Glowing Shapes

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth century
25 1/2" x 13", 64.5 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of old, hand spun, hand woven, katazome dyed cotton cloth that shows a curious pattern. The length is hand stitched from two pieces.

The design is conceived of large, glowing forms which appear to be some kind of fan (but probably is not) which contains images of stylized gourds. What appear to be interlocking metal apparatuses are attached to the shapes while a ring of stippling creates a luminous effect around this mysterious forms.

The ground is faux kanoko or fawn-dappled shibori.

The hand spun cotton yarns create what the Japanese call ito aji or thread flavor, a characteristic that is desirable when collecting old folk textiles.

Mysterious and lovely.
