A Katazome and Sashiko Stitched Garment Section: Radiating Stitching

$90.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
44" x 13", 112 cm x 33 cm

This length of stitched and layered indigo dyed cotton cloth is interesting for its details.

Its base cloth is a very nicely faded and worn indigo dyed cotton that is hand woven from hand spun yarns. Stitched to this are two pieces of old katazome dyed cotton that show chrysanthemums floating in a stylized stream of water.

The center of the cloth shows a dark indigo dyed cotton patch which is stitched in dark blue cotton thread in six lines that radiate out in a fan shape or in angles from a notch in the fabric.

This notch indicates that this length was part of a garment, most likely a half under-kimono. The radiating stitches are quite unusual but are clearly there for reinforcement.

This length contains some curious details and shows good age.

Recommended.
