A 19th Century Plaid and Kasuri Furoshiki: Two Patches

$95.00 USD

ca. late twentieth century
26 1/2" x 25",  67 cm x 63.5 cm

This is a beautiful, subtle and elegant country country textile.

It is a small furoshiki, a traditional wrapping and carrying cloth, and it is woven from indigo dyed cotton yarns.  It shows both an overall checked pattern done in golden colored cotton yarn with an underlay design of a weft egasuri or picture kasuri that depicts flower forms and butterflies.

The cloth is entirely hand stitched and there are two, small, cotton mending patches shown on one side, a freely spaced smattering of pinhead sized holes and one hole that is the size of a lentil.  As well, there is a very faint stain that is nearly undetectable.

A gorgeous old cotton cloth and one that captures the spirit of old Japan.
