{"title":"Boro Textiles","description":"\u003cp\u003eJapan's mended and patched textiles are referred to as \u003ci\u003eboro\u003c\/i\u003e, or ragged, both in Japan and abroad.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003ci\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\nBoro t\u003c\/i\u003eextiles are usually\u003ci\u003e \u003c\/i\u003esewn from nineteenth and early twentieth century rags and patches of indigo dyed cotton.  The diversity of patches on any given piece is a veritable encyclopedia of hand loomed cotton indigo from old Japan.  In most cases, the beautiful arrangement of patches and mending stitches is borne of necessity and happenstance, and was not planned by the maker.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eImagine that \u003ci\u003eboro\u003c\/i\u003e textiles were stitched in the shadows of farmhouses, often at night by the light of one dim \u003ci\u003eandon\u003c\/i\u003e, on the laps of farm women. \u003cbr \/\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crane is beautifully drawn and resisted and we can see its face, wings and long legs.\u0026nbsp; Below the crane there is auspicious \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/blog.srithreads.com\/2011\/03\/back-from-japan-a-very-large-hemp-tstutsugaki-furoshiki-a-freehand-drawn-auspicious-motif\/\"\u003e\u003ci\u003enoshi,\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e a celebratory design based on dried abalone:\u003cem\u003e noshi\u003c\/em\u003e is dried abalone that is stretched into long, ribbon like\n strips.\u0026nbsp; And it is beautifully done, and is quite dense in mending and rich in stitching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of this cloth--or what would have been its proper outside--is a simply beautiful example of \u003ci\u003ekatazom\u003c\/i\u003ee or stencil resist dyed cloth.\u0026nbsp; The pattern which is shown is complex: it is a combination of arabesque (or \u003ci\u003ekarakusa\u003c\/i\u003e) and roundels showing pine, bamboo and plum blossoms, the combination of design motives being called \u003ci\u003eshochikubai\u003c\/i\u003e in Japan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eS\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003ehochikubai\u003c\/i\u003e is a classic, auspicious pattern and it is often used for cloth to be included in a bridal trousseau.\u0026nbsp; The plum is the first bloom to burst forth from the winter's ice and is symbol of strength, the bamboo bends but does not break so it is a symbol of resilience, and the pine, of course conveys a wish for longevity.\u0026nbsp; Also, pine needles fall in pairs, and thus they are a motif often used at weddings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hand spun, hand loomed cotton of this \u003ci\u003ekatazome\u003c\/i\u003e cloth is just fantastic; The plum is \nthe first bloom to burst forth from the winter's ice and is symbol of \nstrength, the bamboo bends but does not break so it is a symbol of \nresilience, and the pine, of course conveys a wish for longevity.\u0026nbsp;
