An Unused Meiji Era Cotton Flag: Hand Spun Cotton Yarns

This boldly graphic banner is woven from extra-wide, hand spun, hand woven cotton. It is tabbed with sixteen hand-stitched and hand applied undyed cotton tabs, some of which are stitched to the banner using elaborate, decorative stitches--and this feature is shown in detail on the accompanying photographs.

The banner is of a type used in military maneuvers but it is unclear what was the original purpose for this banner. What is very clear is that this banner has never been used.

The cotton it thickly woven and the threads are also spun quite thick. The orange-colored ground and the black details seem to be applied with pigment dyes and are clearly aided by the use of resist and stencils.

The flag is in unused, absolutely pristine condition which is unusual and makes for interesting questions.
