early twentieth century

This is an indigo dyed cotton tsutsugaki furoshiki, a furoshiki being a traditional wrapping/hauling/carrying cloth--and furoshiki are still widely used in Japan today.

This one is of a fairly heavy weight, hand woven cotton; the indigo dye on this cloth shows some scuffs from wear as can be seen in the accompanying detail photos.

It shows several resist dyed motifs.

In the center is a family crest, the paulownia flower, set on an angle. On the top, left hand corner we see the traditional hemp leaf pattern which seems to be configured into a what looks like a section of a traditional water wheel. On the bottom, right hand corner is a checkerboard, very graphic.

The overall condition of this furoshiki is used but good. The indigo is slightly scuffed as mentioned above but it is still deep and velvety blue.

The graphics are rich are clear and this is a lovely example of an old furoshiki.

Recommended.
