A Striped Sashiko Stitched Furoshiki: Good Age, Old Cotton

$295.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
54" x 46", 137 cm x 117 cm

This is an absolutely wonderful sashiko stitched, indigo dyed textile from old Japan that does not photograph as beautiful as it truly is when seen in person.

It is a furoshiki or wrapping/carrying cloth that is made of old, heavily woven cotton that shows gradient stripes that are meant to call to mind a waterfall. This type of striped cotton was seen often in 19th century Japan.

The corners are simply sashiko stitched and the alternate corners show a stylized chrysanthemum and a folding fan.

The furoshiki is entirely hand stitched and one side shows a nice constellation of six patches of plaid cotton that seem to have been applied in the 1920s or 30s or so, judging from the type of cloth used.

In good used condition with one small hole, this is a really gorgeous furoshiki from old Japan.

Recommended.
