early twentieth century
42 3/4" x 12 3/4", 108.5 cm x 32.5 cm

This is a length of unused, indigo dyed katazome cotton, the indigo being so deep in coloration or tonality that it appears to be more black than blue.

The pattern is bold and graphic, the starkness of the white figures against the deep-toned ground is pronounced because this length was stencil resisted on both its sides.

The pattern shows flowers, perhaps chrysanthemums, enclosed within a frame of what might be called a kind of highly abstracted bamboo. The traditional well frame or well cover design sits at angles between the diamonds.

This is a very nice length of old katazome cloth with an assertive pattern rendered boldly in dark and light.
