A Length of Katazome Cotton: Crowded Stylized Chrysanthemums

$60.00 USD

early twentieth century
30 1/4" x 13 1/2", 76.5 cm x 34 cm

This is a length of what seems to be machine loomed cotton that is designed with a twill structure.

It is missing one of its selvedge edges which makes it seem the cotton was wider than it is currently and was cut to conform to the Japanese standard loom with which is approximately 13" or 33 cm.

The design is rich as it shows an abundance of stylized chrysanthemums that are playfully arranged among small sprouts of arabesques.

The resist dyed image is slightly blurred and is highlighted with an orange tone, the result of dyeing with bengara which is an iron oxide-derived dye.

Lavish in its design this length of resist dyed cotton is a delight for the eyes.
