A Length of Green Toned Katazome Cotton: Origami Cranes

$105.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
59" x 12 3/4", 150 cm x 32.25 cm

This is a nicely textured length of hand woven, hand spun cotton that is katazome dyed with an interesting pattern representing stylized, woven cypress fencing as a background to origami cranes.

The cranes are small in relation to the geometric background which makes it curious and interesting in terms of scale. The color is a kind of cool but rich green, the result of over dyeing indigo with a yellow dye.

This length is made from three pieces which are machine stitched together, the top most one is placed on its side in contrast to the rest of the length.

On the reverse of the top, left of the length a white cotton triangle was machine stitched to the corner on which no doubt a family name was meant to be written. This has not been done, however.

The cloth is in good, used condition and this kind of pattern which is both pictorial and abstract at the same time is a joy to look at.

Really lovely and rare to see.
