A Length of Boldly Patterned Katazome Cloth: Graphic Pattern

$65.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
40" x 12 3/4", 101.5 cm x 32.5 cm

This boldly patterned length of indigo dyed katazome cotton has a rustic feel due to the areas of blooming indigo in the white, undyed areas of the design and for the good, hand spun, hand woven cotton cloth.

The pattern is based on large, intersecting lines that evoke the matsukawabishi or pine bark motif. Inside each is a group of four symmetrically arranged leaves, either hollyhock or splatterdock.

The indigo is still strong and rich in tone and there is an area of ingrained dirt at the top of the length which is illustrated on the final detail photo shown here.

This is a good length of indigo dyed cotton katazome with good age and a rich pattern.
