A Fragment of Shinafu: Linden Bark Fiber Cloth

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
21 1/2" x 14 1/4", 54.5 cm x 36 cm

This length of bast fiber cloth is called shinafu which is woven from the fibers taken from the inner bark of the linden tree.

Shinafu always shows a distinctive coppery color--as this fragment does-- however this fragment also shows white vertical lines which are white cotton warp yarns, probably used for decorative effect.

Shinafu is a wiry, scratchy cloth and it was used in the making of objects such as bags, noren or, in this case, it seems this may be a fragment from a mosquito net.

A classic Japanese indigenous plant fiber, linden cloth is collectible.
