A Pieced Cotton Coat: Beautiful Shibori Details

$345.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
47" x 47", 119.5 cm x 119.5 cm
shoulder to hem, sleeve tip to sleeve tip

This completely hand stitched and home made coat-like garment is a juban or an under kimono.

As can be easily seen the juban is made from two different types of cotton: the top, grey colored cotton is commercially loomed, while the bottom half is made of absolutely beautiful indigo dyed cotton. The contrast of the textured, top cloth with the boldly patterned shibori is visually striking as it is a very good color/texture combination.

The sleeves are tight and will probably 1/2 or 3/4 length when worn. The general condition of this beautiful garment is used but good, and the condition is completely in keeping with the age of the piece--quite amazing when considering that the cloth used to create this juban is recycled.

A very handsome garment from old Japan.

Recommended.
