This color combination of orange and purple is a common one for garments of this sort which are made from scraps of old clothing.\u0026nbsp; The orange dye is from safflower and the purple is from gromwell root, both dyes being readily available dyestuffs especially in Japan's eastern regions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote the scenic elements in some of the pieces of cloth: sparrows soaring above snow laden bamboo, flying through a sky of hand painted dye.\u0026nbsp; The sparrows and bamboo seem to be applied through a stencil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA faint stain to the pale blue block on the proper right front of the coat, the collar shows wear (note the \u003ci\u003eshibori \u003c\/i\u003esilk on the collar and just near the sleeves).\u0026nbsp; x 87\u0026quot;, 89 cm x 221 cm\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a traveling cape and it is very much emblematic of the late Edo and Meiji eras.\u0026nbsp; \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCalled \u003ci\u003ekappa\u003c\/i\u003e (borrowed from the Portuguese) or a \u003ci\u003ebozukappa\u003c\/i\u003e (Buddhist priest of monk cape) these capes were made as a protection from wind and rain and were usually laminated thusly: a layer of paper was placed between the lining and the exterior of the cape: not only did the paper provide more resistance to the elements, it also created a nice, rustling sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis \u003ci\u003ekappa\u003c\/i\u003e is devoid of the paper lining.\u0026nbsp; However, it is made of 18 wedge-shaped indigo dyed cotton pieces (36 if you count the lining and exterior) and the large, crescent shape is quite luxurious.\u0026nbsp; It is voluminous in size.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is some unraveling to the applied edging material, and there is a slight burn mark to the exterior, which can be seen on detail photos: the burn is just to the left of the proper, left hand circular closure piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eKappa\u003c\/i\u003e are quite collectible, often for the more \u0026quot;deluxe\u0026quot; \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lattice quality of the knotting, the fringe, etc., seem to indicate this garment was ceremonial and not used for housework.\u0026nbsp; Some horse trappings used to decorate horses for \u003ci\u003ematsuri\u003c\/i\u003e or festivals are extremely similar to this apron in construction and in color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece is sturdy; A good deal of its surface cloth has been abraded away or is missing in chunks, especially on the proper front of the undergarment.\u0026nbsp; This can be clearly seen by looking at the attached detail photos. \u003cbr \/\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut it is its overall coloration, its good age, its lovely color fading and the silks that have been dyed in botanical dyes that keep this fragile beauty looking so attractive. \u003cbr \/\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDown the center of the back of the garment is a panel of \u003ci\u003echirimen\u003c\/i\u003e, or crepe, silk dyed in \u003ci\u003ebenibana\u003c\/i\u003e, or safflower dye. Pressure from the boards is forced on the cloth causing a resist.  In the case of this han juban, it seems that these gauzy cotton piece were dyed using safflower or \u003cem\u003ebenibana.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bodice also shows a curious effect.  At first glance it appears that the cotton of the bodice is a \u003cem\u003ekasuri\u003c\/em\u003e or ikat woven cloth.  Upon closer inspection, and when the garment is opened, it is clearly seen that the bodice has been hand dyed, presumably using stencils directly onto the cloth, in order to achieve a\u003cem\u003e faux kasuri\u003c\/em\u003e effect.  Quite amazing and beautiful.  And the type of cloth it is mimicking is a kind of woven silk that is commonly seen in 19th century women's kimono undergarments. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote a splotch of light colored \"staining\" on the proper right, front of the \u003cem\u003ehan
