A Child's or Adolescent's Everyday Kimono: Woven Stripes

$60.00 USD

ca. mid twentieth century
39" x 36", 99 cm x 91.5 cm (shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip)

Not very small, but not worn by an adult, this smallish kimono would have been an everyday garment in old Japan.

Hand stitched of hand woven striped cotton, this kimono shows wear, as it no doubt was worn hard.  Please look at that attached detail photos for a glimpse onto the lining of the kimono, which was sewn using leftover cottons.  The darkened, horizontal band in the middle of the lining is a vestige of the kimono having been hiked up to shorten it, a customary method of shortening a child's kimono.

A drab and wonderful everyday garment, this is one that epitomizes daily life in old Japan.
