This three-panel boro fragment from a futon cover is hand stitched from hand spun, hand loomed cotton which was certainly woven in the late nineteenth century.

It shows two types of wide striped cloth along with a large swath of dark, textured cotton on the lower, right hand quarter of the futon cover. There are a substantial number of patches, about  a dozen in all, which are hand stitched to the surface of this cloth. Along with the patches there are some small tears and holes, and the top seams joining the cloth together have become weakened over time.

The age of the pieces which are joined together to make this piece seem consistent with each other which makes this an old boro cloth, something desirable when considering this type of folk textile.

Beautiful.
