A Large and Wonderfully Varied Boro Futon Cover: Material Mash-Up

$465.00 USD

mid twentieth century
70" x 52", 178 cm x 132 cm

This is a large, exuberantly pieced and stitched boro futon cover, and one that was cobbled together from all types and sizes of scrap cloth, some of very different character and weights than the others.

The result is just beautiful: the hodgepodge of cottons--both machine loomed and hand loomed--is arbitrarily arranged in such a manner as to create a fascinating visual feast of color, texture and scale change, all of which is hand sewn.  Much of the stitching is intense and deliberate.

Pay special attention to the panel on the proper left of the piece: it is quite fascinating to note that when there is no planning and when mending is done for purely practical reasons, that such an masterfully artful episode can result.

Do note that some areas of the futon cover are of just one layer of thin cotton whereas some other areas of built-up of many layers of heavier cotton, resulting in a cloth of many different tensions of cloth.

A gorgeous boro futon cover from the mid twentieth century and one of endlessly fascinating visual interest.
