A Beautiful, Boro Drawstring Bag: Good Age, Patches and Size

This is a beautifully patched and mended--or boro--drawstring bag of good size and with nice age.

The base of the bag is stitched from about seven different cottons ranging in age from late nineteenth century to the early-to-mid twentieth century.  The bag is shown here inside-out in order to highlight the very good patching and hand stitching that have accumulated over time.

Notable among the eight of so patches is the large one of suji or pleated shibori, blue-on-white.  Also seen on the bag is a nice-sized patch of Niko Niko kasuri, a kind of machine aided kasuri which was popular in the 1920s or so.

The cotton and their colors look really nice together, and the textures provided by the very good mending are rich.

The bag's drawstring is not original (this one is made of twisted Japanese paper) however the loops it is threaded through are original and intact.

A gorgeous, boro bag with good size and age--and great appeal.
